Old color example of Ortelius' first map of the Middle East, Turkey and the Eastern Mediterreanean from Sicily to Cyprus, from Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, the first modern atlas of the world. The map is based upon Gastaldi's wall map of Asia. Includes an ornate cartouche, four sailing vessels and sea monster in the Black Sea. The first edition of the was published only between 1570 and 1575, after which time it was replaced by a new plate, with a distinctly different cartouche. : Map shows Mediterranean, Turkey, Middle East, Asia Minor. : Stanford copy: Trimmed into neat line and a bit of soiling in the upper margin.
